Frequently asked questions

Will BeeDrive work with my computer, phone, or tablet?
BeeDrive requires a computer with one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows 10 64-bit (1809 or later)
  • Windows 11
  • macOS 12 and newer
For mobile and tablet photo backup and BeeDrop, BeeDrive requires:
  • iOS 15 or later
  • Android 10 or later
Can I back up multiple phones or tablets to BeeDrive?
Yes, you can back up 5 mobile devices at once.
Can I back up multiple computers to BeeDrive?
Yes, you can back up multiple computers to BeeDrive. To back up a computer, you need to connect BeeDrive to it using a USB cable. If you want to back up another computer, you'll need to unplug BeeDrive from the first one and plug it into the second one.
Don't worry if you made any changes to your files when BeeDrive wasn't connected; these changes will be automatically backed up the next time you plug it in.
Do I need an Internet connection to back up my computer or mobile device to BeeDrive?
Yes, an internet connection is required for the initial installation and setup. After that, it depends on the type of backup you're doing.
  • For computer backup and file sync, you don't need an internet connection.
  • For photo backup and BeeDrop, you'll need an internet connection on both your computer and mobile device.
When your computer and mobile device are on the same local network, the mobile app will connect directly to BeeDrive first for a faster backup speed. If a local connection isn't available, the app will seamlessly switch to the Internet as a fallback option.
Can I back up my photos using cellular data?
Yes, although backing up over Wi-Fi is generally faster, as it's not constrained by the Internet speed of your phone and computer.
Please keep in mind that if you intend to back up remotely, ensure that the computer is connected to BeeDrive, running the BeeDrive desktop software, and not in sleep mode.
Can I view the photos or files backed up to BeeDrive without extra software?

Yes, you can plug BeeDrive into any computer and open the files using the computer’s default file browser (e.g., Windows File Explorer or macOS Finder). This applies even if you need to access those backup files on other people's computers without the BeeDrive software installed.

For photos taken in the proprietary HEIF format, BeeDrive software includes the option to back them up in a more common format (JPEG) so they can be easily viewed on non-Apple devices.

Can BeeDrive back up my iCloud photos?
Yes, simply enable the photo backup feature in the BeeDrive iOS app. The app will then download the photos from iCloud to your iPhone or iPad before backing them up to BeeDrive. Just make sure that your phone has enough storage space during the process.
Does BeeDrive automatically skip already backed up photos and files?
Yes, BeeDrive will only transfer newly created photos or files that have not already been backed up. BeeDrive also uses Delta Sync technology to speed up the syncing process of files by only backing up modified parts of a file rather than the whole file, to save time and storage space.
I'm considering encrypting my BeeDrive using BitLocker on Windows. Will BeeDrive's desktop or mobile apps continue to function after encryption?
Absolutely, as long as you unlock BeeDrive through BitLocker whenever you connect it to your Windows PC.
It's worth noting that after unlocking BeeDrive, you might need to open the BeeDrive desktop app and click on Search Again to initiate its operation. Once done, the desktop app will perform backups and sync with your computer folders. Similarly, the mobile app will back up photos or BeeDrop files to BeeDrive.4
Why do I need to enable Kernel Extension settings on my Apple-silicon based Mac to run BeeDrive for desktop app?
Apple silicon-based Mac blocks third-party apps' kernel extension by default, therefore BeeDrive requires users to manually enable the Kernal Extension to function properly. Along the setup process, you will need to adjust the Security Policy of the Mac to "Reduced Security" and "Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers" from your Mac’s System settings.
Please note that Security Policy mentioned here does not relate to safeguarding your mac from malware. It only allows BeeDrive to install the needed kernel extension, which is also approved by Apple. Please see the step-by-step guide to complete the setup.

Note:

  1. Estimation based on photos and videos taken with iPhone’s default camera settings (format: HEIF/HEVC; video recorded at 4K / 30 fps) stored on a 2 TB BeeDrive.

  2. To back up phone photos, BeeDrop files, or access files on your phone, please make sure to plug BeeDrive to a computer, keep the BeeDrive desktop running in the background, and keep the computer active.

  3. Tested on a carpeted concrete floor.

  4. If you already have existing files on your BeeDrive, we recommend backing them up before encrypting BeeDrive for the first time. This will help mitigate any potential risks during the BitLocker encryption process. Moreover, make sure to store your BitLocker recovery key in a safe place in case you forget your BitLocker password.
